Final week in South Africa!

Hey everyone,

This summer has flown by, we only have ten more days in Africa. It really seems like we just got here yesterday. The girls are finishing up with their exams and beginning to pack up their rooms to head home for their winter holiday. Last week was an emotional week to say our goodbyes to the girls that have already finished. This week is the university’s final week for exams, which means it’s our last week on campus. Friday begins our journey to a different province for the Joint Winter Conference camp until Sunday and then we’re doing mercy ministry in a nearby township. I can’t wait for the camp and to see what the Lord will do over that weekend. Please be praying for boldness during these next few days on campus and during our time this weekend at JWC.

I am sad to leave Africa so soon. There are many many many things about this place that I absolutely love. One of them being the sun, their sky is gorgeous, the sunrise wakes me up every morning and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’ll also miss our team, we’ve grown such a strong bond, it’s sweet. I’ll definitely miss all the girls in Amper Daar, and learning zulu (Lauren and I are slowly becoming fluent). I'll miss our team Sunday workout days and late night McDonalds trips while jamming out to party rockin (It’s basically our theme song for the trip, as well as All My Fountains by Chris Tomlin). I’ll miss fat cakes. Fat cakes are pretty much a big fluffy donut. But it’s magic. Tomorrow Lele is teaching us how to cook them!

It’s been such a blessing to be in Africa sharing our lives with the students here,and witnessing the Lord do wonders in the hearts of these girls. We serve a loving and faithful God. It’s amazing how He uses wretched sinners to spread His gospel, the greatest news we will ever hear:

“Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous. Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” Romans 5:12-21

Things to be praying for:

As of right now there are four girls from Amper Daar committed to coming to the JWC and a few more who are strongly considering it. The four girls who are going are Ikho, Pretty, Lebo, and Gugu. Please be praying that the Lord would prepare their hearts and be at work in them during the camp. The girls who are considering coming (Jamee, Audrey, Katlego, Slee, Lerato, and Lethabo) have a few barriers with money and/or parents. Please be praying that these barriers wouldn’t keep them from coming, and that God would crash down all walls for them. Mark 11:22-24 says, “And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”

That God would continue to be working in these girls hearts, giving them a burning passion for the Lord, and that He would be glorified in them.

For perseverance during this last week on campus to go out strong, bold, and fight for the gospel. “ And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up” Galatians 6:9

That the leaders in Amper daar would continue to be faithful with pouring into the girls.

For the truths of the gospel to be revealed, and protection against false doctrine.

Week 5 update from Lindsay

Hello everyone!

At a dinner we had at Tebogo's house with Esethu and Lebo the other night.





“Oh come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into His presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to Him with songs of praise! For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods, in His hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are His also. The sea is His, for He formed it, and His hands formed the dry land. Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker! For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand”- Psalm 95:1-7

This past week on the campus was incredible to witness God work in the hearts of the girls in Amper Daar. Lauren and I got the chance to lead bible study on Wednesday night. The topic for that bible study was how it looks to surrender your life and follow Christ. We talked through a few verses, the first being Romans 10:9-10 “Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.” We talked through this verse on how it is so easy to say you believe in Jesus, but that it has two parts- believing in your heart as well as saying it. We tied this in with a practical analogy of a man and a wheelbarrow. It goes like this, “a man claims that he can walk across a tight rope without falling to his death and everyone wants to see this so they cheer him on to do it. He walks across just fine and then he says I can walk this rope with a wheelbarrow and still not fall, the crowd eager to see this cheers him on once more. He completes that task, now the man asks if they think he can walk across this tight rope pushing the wheelbarrow with a person in it, the crowd says yes and so he asks who wants to jump in? The crowd was silent.” We explained how even though the crowd watched this man walk across that tight rope, they didn’t trust him with their lives and that’s the same thing as saying you believe in Jesus and confessing with your mouth for that to be true but not trusting Him with your life. Lauren and I then talked about what it looks like “once you’re in the wheelbarrow” and surrender your life. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old as passed away; behold, the new has come”. From there we discussed what it looks like in our life to follow Christ, and how we are to die to ourselves and our kingdom and live for Him and His kingdom. Luke 9:23-24 explains this, “And He said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it but whoever loses his life my sake will save it”. This bible study opened the door for many conversations and tons of questions from the girls.

The next day, Thursday, we got the chance to meet up with one of the girls we have been spending a lot of time with, her name is Lebo. Lebo is always very attentive in bible study and at 3D meetings; you can easily see how she has been captivated by Gods grace. We talked with her about the bible study and she explained how she wanted to be in the wheelbarrow and follow Christ because she can see the joy that that brings and how things of this earth do nothing but perish. She wanted to pray to be in the wheelbarrow (become a Christ follower), so Lauren and I prayed with her. How incredible it was to witness God being glorified when Lebo gave her life to Christ. She has had a rough life growing up- she lost both her mom and dad and was raised by her grandma. Despite the losses that Lebo has faced she realizes that God’s grace is sufficient. Lebo is so precious and sees her need Christ and already all she is thinking about is how she can glorify God in her life. It’s amazing to see what the Lord has done in her life in such a short time. If you get the chance to watch the video on the blog page there is a clip of her. She says “My favorite thing about God is freedom, I’m free now”. Tears filled my eyes as she said this. “For the law of the spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death” Romans 8:2. God is for sure breaking down barriers and softening the hearts of the girls in Amper Daar. Praise the Lord, He is faithful.

Our team only has the rest of this week and next week on campus and at times that seems like not enough time, but God can do major work during that time. There is no such thing as time for God. It’s sweet to know that when we leave here there are already leaders in the res that will continue to be investing there time in these girls like Lebo.

Cultural Excursion:
This past weekend we went camping in Pilanesberg at a game reserve. We packed many layers since its winter and has been beyond cold outside. Thankfully that night was not bad at all! Friday night we ate lots of hot dogs and roasted marsh mellows to make smores and of course played an epic game of mafia. After waking up extremely early on Saturday we took our 10 person van and crammed all 14 of us in there to go on a safari. It was such an amazing experience. Basically there were roads in the middle of this huge piece of land that takes four days to get through, all sorts of animals roam around freely. We saw all the typical animals you think of when you think of Africa; giraffes, a buffalo, elephants, a snake (gross), rhinos, zebras, and many more I’m probably forgetting. By the time we were about to leave to head back home we hadn’t seen an elephant close up yet and we were all pretty sad about that. But then.. it happened. As we were only 3 kilometers away from the exit and there were two elephants standing right next to the side of the road. One walked behind the van and the other was in front of us on the road heading straight towards us. It was so terrifying all fourteen of us were in complete silence. When the elephant was coming for the van it went to the side of us and was so close we could reach our hand out and touch it if we wanted, but no one did that. Don’t worry y’all, we got the whole thing on tape so that will definitely be in the next video update!

Things to pray for:
-As we are gradually approaching the end we are only getting closer to the Joint Winter Conference. Please be praying for girls and guys to attend this and that God would continue to break barriers that seem to prevent them from coming.
-For our team to not grow weary- for perseverance
-that we would continue to ask God for big and specific things
-For the girls in Amper Daar- that their ears would be open to the gospel
-That they would see the difference between the truth of the gospel and false doctrine which they are so exposed to.
-Praise for Lebo becoming a Christian!

“In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. Update of Africa by Lindsay

Hey everyone,

It’s hard to believe that our time here in Africa is already halfway over. We only have 15 more days to be on the campus (3 weeks) and then it’s off to the Joint Winter Conference. Hopefully some Amper Daar girls will be joining us over that weekend! That’s something to be praying for..

Praise the LORD, all nations! Extol Him, all peoples! For great is His steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. Praise the LORD! –Psalm 117
This past week I have definitely seen the Lord’s faithfulness. He has shown us girls in Amper Daar who want a relationship with Him, girls who are so thirsty for the word. It’s beautiful to see their eagerness in wanting to know more about what a life following Christ looks like.

On Wednesday at the 3D meeting, Evan spoke on a test of true belief, the assurance of salvation. After this talk some of the girls began to understand where they stood before God, with the realization that their salvation is not assured. It’s been huge for them to not only see that but to also acknowledge that. God is working in these girls hearts for sure. After the 3D meeting we have bible study in Amper Daar. This past week in Bible study I shared the story of what God has done in my life to draw me to Himself and we talked about John 3, being born again, and how that happens. After going through the parable they had many questions. However, their questions mostly go off the topic we are studying and drift to more general randomized questions on Christianity. The girls who attend 3D for the most part attend the bible study so this week they had a lot of information to take in and many things to process. It has been a great week for follow ups! I am constantly in awe of the Lord with the work that He is doing in these girls hearts as well as in me.

A few of the girls Lauren and I have been able to spend time with have are opening up and sharing more about themselves with us. For instance, one girl has shared about losing both her parents and how she grew up. She has been attending bible study and is really interested in learning more. It’s been so sweet to see how much she has grown and learned in just a week. The next step with her is to start going through how to read and study the bible. I can’t get over how amazing it is to witness the Lord at work. In times when I am so exhausted from the long days on campus the Lord is quick to show His faithfulness and reminding me who why we are here.

The Lord has taught me many things while in being Africa. The main thing is how dependent we need to constantly be on Him. Nothing that has been done in any of the res’s were done by any of the members of this team, it has all been the work of the Lord. I am so thankful for that, Praise the Lord. It always amazes me how God chooses to use broken people to be His instruments, His hands and feet, to bring Him glory.

Some fun things CCP does on Saturdays:
Two Saturday’s ago we got to go to the Lion and Rhino park. It was the coolest experience ever. When I think of Africa, I think lions, elephants, and tigers. You know, like the lion king. At this lion and rhino park we got to drive through where lions, tigers, rhinos, and countless other animals I can’t spell or name live. We would be driving and look down and lions would be right there at the edge of the road sleeping (that’s how close we were). We also got the opportunity to play/pet the baby lions and tigers. If you haven’t gotten the chance to watch the awesome video’s Lewis has been posting on the blog… you should, there are great pictures and footage from that day. The best part was that I got a scratch from a lion, so now I get to say that “I got clawed by a lion while in Africa” Legit. This past Saturday we went back to Soweto. We met K.B. and FiFi’s family; they are on staff with Campus Outreach Johannesburg. Seeing how they grew up really changed my perspective on comfort. In K.B.’s grandmother’s house at one point they had 21 people live there with two bedrooms, currently there are 9 people living there. While we were in Soweto we bought these sandwiches everyone has been talking about, a kota. Basically this is where they take a piece of bread cut out some of the middle and put in meat (Russian sausage and I think it was bologna) add French fries and combine all the sauces they had and then cover it with the flap that was cut in the beginning. It may sound disgusting, but it was delicious!

This coming weekend we are planning as a team to go camping at the Pilanesberg game reserve. That should be fun and adventurous but it’s definitely going to be pretty cold.

Things to pray for:
-For the JWC and attendance (for the Lord to break down all barriers)
-For boldness in conversations as we don’t have much time left here
-To continue to seek God first
- Patience
-Energy
-For this experience to be faith building
-For our wonderful team to continue to grow together in unity

Thank you guys so much for your prayers. I am so thankful for a wonderful support/prayer team that has been nothing but encouraging. I hope all is great back in the states. I’ll keep y’all posted on the next few weeks here.

Lindsay's South African update #2

Hey everyone,

It’s hard to believe that it has already been two weeks since we’ve gotten here! Time seems like it’s flying. When we first got here they said it was winter, but it was pretty warm. Little did we know that winter right around the corner. Who would have thought it could get so cold in Africa! The girls in the picture with Lauren and I are Thompho and Robertha, they're roommates in their first year at UJ, and are just sweet as can be!

Last weekend we got the chance to visit Soweto, a township outside of Johannesburg. We learned in the previous week when we went to the apartheid museum that families were moved out of the city to this township. There were homes practically stacked on top of one another and people everywhere. Soweto has tons of residences, but it’s not the safest or nicest place in South Africa. The town itself broke my heart. While we were there we went to the Orlando Pirates soccer game. It was insanely loud and fun. People were dancing and blowing their vuvuzala’s left and right and those things are loud. I’m definitely bringing one back to the states! The crowd was way more enthusiastic than any other sports game I had ever been to. It was awesome.

The first week Lauren and I concentrated on getting to know the girls in Amper Daar. It has been great to see how all the girls we’ve met seem to love it when we visit them. God has been so faithful with our time in Amper Daar and has given us opportunities to go into deeper spiritual conversations. We’ve gotten the chance to hear some of the girls’ backgrounds and how they’ve been exposed to Christianity, most of it being prosperity gospel type stuff. The second week we've been getting into more in depth conversations.

On Wednesday Campus Outreach Joburg has their CO meeting that they call 3D and after that Amper Daar has bible study. This week in bible study we went over the bridge diagram, which covers Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”. As we broke down the verse, wages, sin, death were one side. Meaning, the wages of sin is death. The other side separated by a gap was gift, god, eternal, meaning the free gift of God is eternal life. This was a clearer illustration for them to see where we as humans stand apart from God, and that the only way to bridge that gap is through Jesus Christ, our Lord. God is doing work in Amper Daar, the girls in the bible study were so intrigued. One of the girls eyes were lit up from the time 3D started until we saw her last. I think that was the first time she heard the gospel, and it’s obvious to see her desire to know more. It’s absolutely beautiful. To see them thinking and questions arising and how the Lord is working in their hearts is really neat. We’ve given a few girls the Life Issues book series, which goes through the gospel of John, and they are all extremely excited to go through it with us! The door has been opened for gospel centered conversations and chances for Lauren and I to continue to be bold with what we say and to stand firm in faith.

This Friday (today) we’re having what they call a braii (barbque). This is an opportunity to invite the girls we’ve been spending time with and for them to meet the rest of our team. It’s also a great thing for some of the girls because they hardly get off campus for anything so this will be a sweet time for them to leave campus, eat, play games, and relax before all the big end of semester tests start next week.

Also, we have the Joint Winter Conference coming up June 24-26 it’s like our New years conference we hold in Nashville every year. The JWC is going to be an exciting time for the students to learn more, get questions answered, and grow. Some of the girls show lots of interest in wanting to come. Others would like to come but are going home for their winter break. Finals end at various times, depending on the majors. Some end as early as June 7th, but for the most part they end around the 15th. This seems like a huge barrier getting them to stay on campus until the 24th but God is mighty and can tear any barrier down.

I’ve been clinging on to Colossians 4:2-6. It says, “Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison- that I may make clear, which is how I ought to speak. Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best us of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.” This goes along so well for our time in Africa, since we have a very limited time here, we need to be making the best use of our time, loving these girls and proclaiming Christ.

Please continue to pray, here are some things you can be praying for:
-That God would continue to work in the hearts of these girls
-For the JWC, that any and all barriers would come crashing down.
-That Lauren and I would run hard for the next 22 days we have on campus, being bold in sharing.
-For the team, that we would have unity and be encouraging to one another.
-Patience, I am so quick in wanting to see results now that I forget that the Lord is perfect in His timing.
-Energy- these days seem long and can be exhausting

I miss y’all and hope that everything in Georgia and Florida (for those of you at SLP this summer) are going wonderful and I have to admit, I’m jealous for how warm you guys are. Thank you for all the encouraging emails and for all your prayers!

Our first few days in AFRICA!

Johannesburg, South Africa is amazing! The past couple of days we have been getting to spend time with our team and the leaders involved with campus outreach joburg. The first full day we were here went to the Apartheid museum to learn what that was like and how this country has been united together and gained freedom. We’ve also gotten to have some African food...which is delicious! The people here are beyond welcoming, it’s been such a blessing to be able to have this opportunity to come and see that the Lord has truly called our team here this summer and will use it for His glory.

On Sunday while we were at church I got a glimpse of how big our God is. As we worshipped our Lord I realized that they sang the same songs here as we do back home and that the pastor preached the same gospel. (I knew that that would be the case) but seeing it first hand opened my eyes more to see more of who our God is, the creator of the universe, of all nations. There was this reality that no matter the culture and how different we all are, the gospel remains constant, it’s never changing and unites all of God’s children together. Just thinking about that makes me say wow and puts me in a place to where I am in complete awe of God.

Monday was our first day in the dorms (they call them res’s) where we all got with our ministry partners and met the students of the university. Lauren Bice and I were switched to a res called Amperdaar. A few of the older girls, Tebogo, Ikho, and Pretty showed us around and introduced us to a few of the first year girls. It was so much fun to get to walk in their rooms and talk with them and just to get to know everyone. We are both so excited to continue to meet these girls and build relationships with them. We were reminded earlier that morning of the great commission, Matthew 28: 18-20 “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you, And behold, I am with you always to the end of the age”. We have been entrusted with the good news of the gospel, that Jesus came, humbled Himself by death on a cross, died for our sins because He loved us and was raised, so that we can live in Him and be reconciled with our Father. By reading the great commission and hearing that command, how could we not go out and share this truth and what joy it brings. What a blessing we have been given.

Sunday night all the girls on the team got together and talked about things they wanted to be praying for this summer. One of the things I said was that I wanted to be interesting to the girls in res’s. And as we were in a dorm room meeting with a few students one of the girls needed to go study for a test but she said she didn’t want to leave because “we were so interesting’. That struck me. Seeing how God has answered prayers just in the first day and that He is with us continuously. What a sweet reminder to lean on Him.

Please pray that we would continue to go hard these next weeks, be bold in our conversations, remember that our identity is in Christ, that we would follow where the Lord would lead us., and for the hearts of the students here – that they would be softened by the gospel.

“All the nations You have made shall come and worship before you, O Lord, and shall glorify your name. For You are great and do wondrous things; You alone are God” –Psalm 86:9-10

Meet Our Team!

Our team is a group of 2 staff and 13 students from Campus Outreach Atlanta. CO Atlanta is an interdenominational ministry with a vision to glorify God by building laborers on the college campus for the lost world. This summer we will be spending 7 weeks on a campus in Johannesburg, South Africa partnering with the Campus Outreach team to ministry to South African students.

Jeremy M.  I graduated from North Georgia in May 2010 with a degree in History Education.  I am now in my first year on staff with Campus Outreach at the University of Georgia.  I am excited to be a part of this team for the summer because I believe that the vision we get to be a part of is an opportunity to impact not only South Africa, but all of Africa and the entire world.

Kira B.  I graduated from Georgia Tech in May 2007 with a degree in Industrial Design and am in my fourth year on staff with Campus Outreach.  Since I graduated I have been on staff at North Georgia College and State University, but have recently moved into the role of our office administrator for Campus Outreach Atlanta.  I want to go to South Africa with hopes of growing in my love for God's people and God's world.

Ashley D.  I am a junior at North Georgia College and State University and I'm studying Psychology.





Ben E.  I am in my 4th year at North Georgia and I'm studying Accounting.  I believe the CCP will give me an opportunity to experience something outside of what I think I know, to have my eyes opened to the power of God, to see how He is beyond anything I can imagine, to have a chance to labor for His kingdom, and to answer the call.

Blaine V.  I am in my 5th year at Georgia Tech and I'm studying Chemical Engineering with a minor in Business.  I want to go to South Africa because I think that's where God is working, and I want to put myself right in the middle of that.  becuase of this it will be an area that will force me to grow.

Chad T.  I am in my senior year at North Georgia and I'm studying Business Management.  I want my view of the gospel to be more than just America, I want to see God work in other countries in different ways, I want to see my faith grown through the gospel being presented in different cultures, and I want to be a doer and not just a hearer of the Word.

Danielle D.  I am in my junior year at University of Georgia and I'm studying Child and Family Development.  I'm excited for the unexpected.  I love the idea that we have a God who is so big that we cannot exaggerate.  The greatness of God makes me realize that the opportunities are endless because anything can happen.

Emily F.  I am in my 4th year at University of Georgia and I'm studying Music Education.  In my own walk with the Lord, I have seen how He's pursed me.  I feel like He has done such great things in my life - more than I deserve - and I look forward to the opportunity to share that with someone who might never have heard or encouraging someone who is struggling to persevere.

Evan L.  I am in my senior year at North Georgia and I'm studying Business Management.  I am excited about the opportunity to experience a culture outside of what we live in.  I want to see Christ in a whole new way and do His kingdom work in a whole new way.

Josh C.  I am in my junior year at North Georgia and I'm studying Biology.  When I think about God's heart, the Great Commission, and how Christianity is not just an American thing, I feel an urgency to go and take the gospel to the nations.  To be a part of something great - something bigger than yourself.

Karen G.  I am in my junior year at the University of Georgia and I'm studying International Affairs with a minor in Anthropology.  I am most excited about the vision of students coming to Johannesburg for college and then going back home to share the gospel as leader's in their community.

Lauren B.  I am in my 4th year at Georgia Tech and I'm studying Business Administration.  I'm praying that the Lord would use me to bring someone to Christ or to be a part of planting seeds in someone's life while we're in South Africa.  I've never experienced that before, and I think it's a beautiful thing.

Lawton F.  I am in my 4th year at Georgia Tech and I'm studying Public Policy.  I want to go to South Africa because I am understanding what world vision means, and that it is God's greatest call to us to spread His Word to all the nations.  It is an incredible opportunity to share the gift I have been given with people who may never hear it otherwise.

Lewis H.  I am in my junior year at University of Georgia and I'm studying Accounting.  I am most excited about being stretched, and having to trust God with something that is out of my comfort zone.  I also want to continue to develop a heart for sharing the gospel and seeing people brought from death to life, particularly with the vision in view of reaching an entire continent through the multiplication of a few.

Lindsay R.  I am in my 4th year at North Georgia and I'm studying Psychology and Sociology.  This summer, I am excited to build relationships with women in South African, to make new friendships and to minister to college students.  I'm also excited to see a new country - to see that our God is not in a box but He is the God of the universe.
